Here’s something unexpected. After one year and a half since we first heard that RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook will get a 4G LTE version, this almost forgotten device returns under the spotlight with beefed-up specs, a rumored release date and all that good stuff.
We took an interest in the Wi-Fi PlayBook ever since we first heard about its price tag back in 2010, then by the end of the year the device in question flexed its muscles at a Roger event. At the beginning of year 2011 the 4G LTE version was officially announced and we obviously expected this device to hit the market in a timeframe close to the Wi-Fi only version. Evidently things haven’t turned out as expected and now the return of this rather-old device really comes as a surprise. Let’s see what it has in store for us.

Beefed Up 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook Release Date: Just Around The Corner ?
4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook Specs
So here’s the deal. The guys over at MobileSyrup got their hands on a leaked document concerning the specs and release date of the 4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook.
Long story short, the tablet in question benefits from a 7-inch display supporting a resolution of 1024 x 600, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 5 MP camera on the back with 1080p HD video recording capabilities, 3 MP camera on the front, it runs on OS 2.0 and it’s all kept together by a 4,800 mAh battery. Also, it comes only with 32 GB of internal storage and no word of a 64 GB version has surfaced yet. Last but not least, its dimensions are 130 x 193 x 9.7 mm and its weight is 425 grams.
4G LTE BlackBerry PlayBook Release Date and Price
So how much will you have to pay for the 4G LTE PlayBook you might wonder? Word around the campfire is that the tablet in question will have a price tag of $549.95. Is it worth it? To be honest, with the release of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 closing in fast, we’re really not sure about the PlayBook’s success.
However, since Samsung’s tablet will not hit the market this month, an unveiling being expected mid-August, the PlayBook might have a window of opportunity.
Judging by the screen above, the PlayBook should hit the Canadian market via Bell on July 31st. No word on a US launch yet, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.
Bottom line, this comeback is quite intriguing but we don’t know if it’s as surprising as the possible HTC Quattro/Vertex comeback. Is this the new trend…?
