iPhone 6 To Feature A New Sony Exmor Sensor? (13MP, 1/2.3 Sensor Size)

by Mihai Matei on July 17, 2014

It’s really no mystery that Apple intends on releasing a new flagship phone by the end of the year, but what still remains a mystery is the smartphone’s exact hardware specifications. With each new leak we get one step closer to finding out what the Apple has in store for us, and today we’ll tackle one of the more intriguing aspects of the device – its main camera.

It’s a well-known fact that Apple invests a lot of energy in its main shooters, and iPhones in general have been praised for their ability to capture moments in high quality format. With that in mind, every Apple enthusiast expects the next-gen iPhone to sport a great shooter, and based on the latest rumors, the Cupertino-based giant will most likely deliver on these expectations. More after the break.

iPhone 6 to Pack a New Exmor Sensor?

If you’re an iPhone user and you need to know everything about what makes your smartphone tick, chances are that you already know the iPhone 4S, 5 and 5S make use of Sony’s Exmor sensors. The 4S and 5 use an Exmor IMX145 unit, whereas the ongoing 5S packs a newer model.

Now, according to the latest rumors, Apple will allegedly adopt a new shooter for the iPhone 6, namely the Sony Exmor IMX220. Apparently this new unit boasts 13 MP and a 1/2.3″ sensor and is capable of recording 1080p videos (3840 x 1080 resolution sampling). The source of this new rumor has a great track record when it comes to Sony related rumors, so we’d file this under “there is a chance it might happen”.

It’s also interesting to note that the same sensor is also expected to make an appearance on the Sony Xperia Z3 (although with 20MP shooting capabilities), and that these 13 MP units are already being sold at the price of $27 a pop via the online retailer “Alibaba“.

We should also mention that this isn’t the first time we hear rumors about Apple switching to a different Sony sensor. We came across a similar report back in March, when word on the street was that the iPhone 6 will sport a new 8 MP sensor with optical image stabilization and 6P sapphire lens.

Whatever the case, the iPhone 6′s camera will probably impress and we’re more than eager to take it for a test drive. That won’t happen for at least a few more months though, so stick around and we’ll keep you up to speed as soon as we learn more.
