Folks who own the LG Optimus 2X have something to celebrate for, as LG announced that the phone is going to receive Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich. For those who don’t remember, Ice Cream Sandwich is the latest Android version that will arrive on the upcoming Google phone ( the Samsung Galaxy Nexus ) and will bring many improvements and features to the Android ecosystem. We already analized Ice Cream Sandwich and its features, and I think the hardware acceleration present in ICS combined with the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset will make the LG Optimus 2X shine again.
The LG Optimus 2X was the first ever dual-core handset, so it only makes sense to reassure people they didn’t forgot about it. This time, as you can see above, the announcement was made via the official LG Mobile Facebook page, and was made to deny rumors that the phone won’t get updated to Ice Cream Sandwich. LG also claims that “other LG high-end smartphones” will get the sweet update, but we don’t have any details on what LG considers a high-end smartphone.
At this point it seems obvious that the T-Mobile G2X ( T-Mobile’s LG Optimus 2X ) will receive the same treatment, but T-Mobile will most surely have an impact on the release date.
Considering that Ice Cream Sandwich hasn’t even been released to the public by Google, we don’t have any details from LG concerning when the LG Optimus 2X will be updated. My guess would be in the first months of 2012, but I want to see LG actually working on this upgrade, as the latest Android version for the Optimus 2x is only 2.2 Froyo.
