How To: Manually Install the Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 Update – No OTA

by Vlad Andrici on February 22, 2011

As promised, Sprint has started rolling out Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 update yesterday, February 21st. And as you probably know, the update is being released OTA, in waves, so that’s why some of you haven’t received it yet.

However, if you just can’t wait until the 25th ( according to Sprint, everybody should receive the update by then ) there is a simple way to manually download and install the Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2.1 update. Got your attention ? Read below.

How To: Manually Install the Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 Update - No OTA

  1. Go to Samsung and download the Epic 4G Android 2.2 Froyo update ( click on the software tab ).
  2. Connect your Epic to the computer, mount your SD card and move the update.zip file on it.
  3. Turn off the handset.
  4. Hold “Volume Down” and “Camera” and then press the “Power” button.
  5. Normally, the update process should begin automatically.
  6. Reboot you Epic 4G.

If everything has gone according to plan you should be now rocking the official Android 2.2.1 Froyo update on your Epic, without waiting for your OTA wave.

According to Sprint, here are the main benefits of installing the update:

  • Improved Bluetooth device support
  • Bluetooth Voice Dialing
  • GPS enhancements
  • Improved overall performance

I got the 2.2.1 today update and haven’t really played much with it..

My first reaction was being excited to be able to do bluetooth voicedial. And then i tried it. It is worse than nothing!! It is the most pathetic attempt at fixing a now mandatory problem since many states prohibit dialing a phone and it’s dangerous anyway.

This version is beyond anything horrible and there are no terms that would pass the filters that explain it.

It uses the old voice dial on the phone, which is now unusable, which isn’t a huge problem. But try it and see. you’ll get a barely audible foreign sounding female voice and when you try to say something, such as ‘dial 654-344 and stop, it will connect you to something like 843-462-5063 and won’t ask if it’s right or wrong, it’ll just connect you. It doesn’t matter than it’s totally wrong and you didn’t even SAY 10 digits. If I say Call Laura, it dials mom and dad.

But wait, this isn’t even the worst part. If the phone isn’t ON with the screen active and the phone unlocked it won’t work at all! YES!! You have to get out your phone, turn it on, enter the passcode or unlock it or it won’t DO ANYTHING. What friggin good is this if you have to get your phone out, and activate it to use a terrible bluetooth voice dial? Isn’t the whole point of this is to not have to fuss with your phone while driving??

    This is a joke right?

If this was what we’ve been waiting forever for, this is a pretty lame excuse for voice dial. This is the worst possible excuse for voice dial i’ve ever seen.

This isn’t even funny..! It really sucks!
