Samsung Fascinate Receives The Planned Update – It’s Not Android 2.2

by Vlad Andrici on January 11, 2011

A few days ago we shared with our readers that, according to a leaked screenshot, a Samsung Fascinate update is being prepped for release on January 10th. We kind of hoped that this will be the much awaited Samsung Fascinate Android 2.2 update but, sadly, this wasn’t the case.

I guess that Samsung and their partners are still working to make the US Galaxy S Android 2.2 update available, like promised, but man…they sure are testing the crap out of them ( assuming the Samsung Captivate, Fascinate, Vibrant and Epic 4G Android 2.2 OS is indeed in the testing phase as the company tweeted a few days ago ).

On the bright side of things, Verizon did release a Samsung Fascinate Maintenance Update that includes “numerous enhancements and improvements“. What exactly are those ? Read below to find out.

Samsung Fascinate Receives The Planned Update - It's Not Android 2.2

First and foremost, this Samsung Fascinate Maintenance Update is supposed to fix the issue most of our readers complained about – the GPS. In Verizon’s words, the update should “improve stand-alone GPS performance“. Drop us a comment and let us know if this is indeed the case.

This update also increases your phone’s security as your 3G Mobile Hotspot password will no longer be exposed while you’re typing it, enhances the backlight display for Samsung Fascinate’s 4 bottom buttons ( they will now act accordingly to the device display timer setting ) and the music will now pause as soon as you unplug your headphones/headset or turn off your Bluetooth headset.

This Maintenance Release also bring minor but useful improvements as now you’ll be able to open any PDF e-mail attachments, include special characters when writing your e-mails and change the remainder time and alert tone for calendar events. Your feeds and widgets updating process has been improved and your Samsung Fascinate will remain in a locked state when you place it in a desk or car dock.

Check out all the improvements brought by this new update in the picture below.

Another thing that you should know about this new Samsung Fascinate update is the fact that it will be released in phases. So if you don’t receive it ( OTA ) today…don’t forget…tomorrow is another day.

I haven’t even gotten this update in Ohio either

    • dogod

      Yeah…

FUCK Verizon and Samsung for doing such a fucking SHITTY job of giving us an update that has been promised several times but not delivered.

Pisses me off watching Samsung gloat in Twitter about it’s new phones at CES… WHO GIVES A FUCK about your new phones, Samsung!? I’ve still got a perfectly good Fascinate that’s STILL waiting for Froyo!

They had BETTER be working on a surprise Gingerbread update.

      • corey p

i agree on that, i got da epic as well

      • chris

How do we get the update? Is it pushed automagically or do we download it from the market?

        • el_div

Chris, the update is delivered OTA.

    • LMH

I just got it now… 11:30p 1-24-2011. Bummer though, I got excited and thought it was the 2.2, as did all else I’m sure.

complete crap. This is just the same update they sent out in sept. I still have yet to receive the supposed update that came out yesterday and from the looks of the snapshot, it looks like those are very similar if not exactly the same “improvements” as the update back in sept

  • Kando

The samsung galaxy tab just received android 2.2 froyo. So hopefully the rest of the galaxy line-up wll recieve them soon as well.

  • “Fascinated” by “customer no service”

I remember seeing a video preview of said update several weeks ago… could the update have been released in another country first(?). Regardless, only the 2.2 update matters, and perhaps the GPS for some. I’m completely frustrated as VZW lists the update as available, yet doesn’t actually update my phone when I follow said steps. Likewise, Samsung is developing a very bad reputation among many users (just read the blogs) as they don’t even explain the HISTORY of previous international releases of the long awaited (yet soon outdated) 2.2. With Flash support and performance enhancements waved in our faces, NATURALLY people will be upset and impatient. I’ve read all the blogs, and we’re going crazy. The worst part is – the “customer no service” representatives will not say ANYTHING – not even about what has already been released in other countries. I’ve had two reps tell me there is NO way the fascinate might go directly to 2.3 Gingerbread, but a blogger has posted exactly that. We can’t be sure… that’s the worst part.

So sick of this, the only reason I decided to go with this phone over the HTC Incredible is because they promised a 2.2 update in the fall of ’10. And you are very right, by the time we get the 2.2, it’ll be old news and we’ll be playing this game again waiting for 2.3 .

      • LMH

I am in the same boat, Keith. I was actually told “October of 2010″ and here we are in almost January 2011. They should do something for the customers who own this phone, as many of us did purchase it with that promise. We wanted to be up on things with our new phones, not lag behind.

So you want to hear a good one. 29 days ago I bought the fascinate. I upgraded from a Droid with 2.2. I do miss 2.2 but love the fascinate with the exception of GPS. I called Verizon and Samsung in the first week of ownership complaining. I was told it was a known issue and a fix was on its way. So I eagerly awaited today. However, I did not get update. Since I know that these updates get pushed in groups, I called Verizon to ask for an extension till on my 30 day return. My hope is to test the update and hopefully keep the phone with the GPS fix. I don’t know if update will fix the problem until I have it. I was told they would not extend the return date. Thus they are forcing me to return the phone and get something different. Mind you I have 5 smartphones in my family and have been a Verizon customer for well over 10 years. HOW SHORT SIGHTED is this company…… Oh and one last thing for the lawyers out there, isn’t there a class action opportunity for the phone companies giving you a like new replacement when your brand new phone doesn’t work out of the box. Seems like they should be required to give you a brand new phone when the phone does not work as advertised.

To end, I really like the fascinate, but can’t accept it with a broken GPS software issue.

    ALERT ALERT ALERT !!

    Read this first !!

I have a samsung fascinate from verizon wireless. Last night my phone got updated automatically. It left a weird symbol on my Task bar next to the 3G symbol. It is kind of like a plus mark inside a rhombus with signal strength ‘)))’ next to it. Sort of like this
[+]))) .. not exact .. but you get the idea… its a plus sign inside rhombus with signal strength on the right side to it.

I was suspecting it to be my verizon navigator but its not… i have stopped all applications using my advanced task killer but it still shows up. I also rebooted the phone but it didnt work. So I was thinking it could be some network issue and didnt touch it again.

But now when I connect my phone to the computer (Mac) it doesnt connect in usb mode at all.. it says “verizon mobile” and disconnects automatically.. and I am not able to open it in mass storage mode. I also tried media mode … nothing works…

Does anyone have the same behavior? I searched in all forums but no luck !!

    Please let me know,

    Thanks,
    DJ

I called the Verizon number, and I was told that it was the “E-911″ symbol, and that there was not a way to turn it off. Apparently, it lets emergency services no where you are when you call 911.
