Sprint and the Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 Froyo Update

by Vlad Andrici on January 24, 2011

UPDATE 25.03.11: Sprint has released the Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 update…again.

Well last week has been a good one for the US Samsung Galaxy S owners. First and foremost the Samsung Vibrant Android 2.2 update has been released by T-Mobile ( let’s hope the other carriers will follow suite ) and some very disturbing rumors have been shut down ( like Samsung charging extra for the Samsung Epic 4G, Vibrant, Fascinate and Captivate Android 2.2 updates or the Samsung Vibrant Android 2.2 update being pushed back in order to prevent a potential decrease in value of the Samsung Vibrant 4G ).

With T-Mobile leading the way all eyes are on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon. Among these carriers, Sprint has been pretty vocal about the upcoming Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 update. What did the carrier had to say ? Check it out after the break.

As soon as news broke out regarding the Vibrant Android 2.2 update, Sprint took it to Twitter in order to let its customers know that Sprint and Samsung are working on the Epic 4G Android 2.2 update. Release date: ASAP.

Sprint then followed the above tweets with a blog post that says pretty much the same thing: Sprint and Samsung are working on releasing the Samsung Epic 4G as soon as possible. Sadly the carrier cannot commit to an exact Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 release date just yet but from the sound of it they’re in a “rigorous” testing phase.

However, if you’ll try contacting Sprint’s regarding the Smasung Epic 4G, Samsung Epic and Sanyo Zio Android 2.2 updates support you’ll get on of the following answers:

Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2

It’s a good thing that Sprint is actually talking about it, but if you’re tired of waiting for an official release ( and you’re willing to get your hands a bit dirty ) you should know that there are some pretty good Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 custom ROM’s out there that will give you a taste of the Froyo pie and some ( we talked a few days ago about the Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 powered TrulyEpic ROM ).

Thanks Android Central for the info on the highly anticipated Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.2 update.

  • skeebyjeebies

viper rom is way better than stock 2.2. Do it you wont regret it.

    • Andrew

      1. There is no “stock 2.2″
      2. Without an official release, Samsung will not release source code for the kernal. Any serious rom development/improvement is currently on hold untill Samsung releases the source code following an official release from Sprint.

      • DCRocks

Actually, there is an “official” leaked version of Android 2.2 for the Epic. Version DK28 was “leaked”, and it contained a 2.2 kernel and was built for the Epic’s hardware. It is not fully polished, and may have some issues, but it is Android 2.2. It is this release that the 2.2 ROMs are built off of, not hacked and/or modded versions of 2.1

        • Andrew

Go back to XDA and read more. You’ll know what I mean when the kernel drops.
Not that I’m ragging on the ROMs there, I’m on Supernova 1.6, probably the most stable ext4 rom i’ve come across. ext4 actually puts us closer to 2.3 than 2.2, yet try comparing DK28 rfs roms and some of the 2.1 roms with modded kernals…there’s no flash or updated text selection, but they ran smoother and faster.
If you think what they have now is good, what they’ll have with access to source (compiling their own kernals) will be amazing.
Unfortunatly Samsung will not release source for a “test” build. Everything is on hold until source drops.

Sprints remarks on twitter reflect nothing they haven’t been telling us since August 2010.
What I would appreciate from them would be a rough estimate ETA regarding the release date of an update.
Even if they missed the ETA, all they would have to do to keep me satisfied is re-tweet what the hold-up is and give a new timeframe. It would at least show us that it is employing resources to provide the best experience to its customers.
Their current “response” does nothing to convince me that they are making a concerned effort on behalf of its customer base.

    I would rather hear:
    1. “we appologise for another setback concerning the update to 2.2, we have discovered more bugs. We hope to have them fixed within the next week.”
    Than:
    2. “We are working on it and will have it out ASAP!” (something they have been repeating with varrying degrees of conviction for 5 months and counting…)

Under my current contract for 2 epics I will be paying them an approx. total of $3600 dollars over 24 months. The lack of support and vagueness of their comments without any clear timeline estimates are keeping me from continuing any future business after my contract expires.

If they want my money in the future, they will have to earn it over the next months.

  • Nunya

This is some bullcorn!! When my contract is up, and I’m shopping for a phone to replace my Epic 4g, I’ll remember this Samsung. The HTC Evo Shift is looking pretty awesome right now. Not receiving a timely update has left me so disappointed, that at this point, nothing short of Gingerbread will satisfy me. Too little too late on froyo.

  • jay

No more Sprint. No more Samsung refrigerators, Tv’s or phones for me. Was told 2.2 was “a few weeks out” before I stroked the Amex MONTHS AGO for the Epic Failure!

    • Traxx

Samsung 2.2 FROYO has been out for a while. Cell phone carriers have not relesed it yet as an over the air update. To update use Samsung Kies version 1.5.10074_45. Do not update application. It will automatically advise you of the 2.2 update.

      • Andrew

Kies is disabled in the epic, it allows you to tether to a computer without sprint charging you $30 for “hotspot” service.

  • RJW

This is Samsungs M.O.! This is what they have done in the past, and will do in the future.
While we all whine and cry about our lack of froyo, they laugh all the way to the bank. They don’t give a rats *ss about customer service, they never have, and they never will.
That is samsung for you, a multinational, multi product line massive corporate giant who only cares about profits.
What can you do? Stop buying their products. However, someone else will. And they will continue to laugh all the way to the bank.

    • RabbitMan

You’re getting them confused with Apple there. I love my back-lit LED Samsung HDTV..I wouldn’t trade it for any other TV out there right now. I also love my Samsung Blu-Ray, and my Epic 4G. Never have had a single problem with any of them, and I can’t find a reason to complain. I’ll also more than likely buy they next line of Samsung phone out, using their next custom CPU.

  • http://www.dominikstriplin.com Dominik

I would be willing to try one of the custom roms for the Epic.

  • gerry sivers

Shame on me for giving Samsung another chance after a string of bad products. Shame on Sprint for acting like they don’t care because they have all of those new Evo customers. A company like Sprint should know that communication is key. I have a business and would never treat my customers like this when they have legit issuse with a product I sell. Sprint should know that even if it’s not their fault, it’s making them look bad. Fact is, my 3rd Epic still won’t give me my email unless I turn it on and off several times a day. How can this be in 2011? A $550 phone that can’t synch email? Maybe I’ll tell sprint that I didn’t get my email with my bill.

  • Andrew

What is sad is that beside their poor delivery on updates, these phones are really top of the line. The processor is amazing, the screen is beautiful, the radio is so-so(the one in my hero was better), but overall this is a fantastic piece of equipment.

I really thought it would be different this time considering they even included a gyroscope that won’t be fully implemented until android 2.3.

They actually have the potential to give apple a run for their money, but people won’t keep coming back until they adopt a similar level of support. Apple pops a new phone out every year, but they keep upgrading the old ones until the hardware can no longer take it.

If Samsung adopts the same policy, I will keep coming back every 2 years.

The real pressure needs to come from the Carrier, not us. If Sprint and the other US carriers give them enough heat, we might still have a chance.

With affordable, unlimited data and top of the line hardware that holds together over time, these two could show the rest how it is done.

Protip: The Touchwiz interface itself adds another 2 months to the updates. If you contact either of these businesses for any reason, request that they stop including Touchwiz.

    • RabbitMan

I agree, and I have been drooling over the Nexus S every time I see it..as it is a Galaxy S without touchwiz or the like..without custom updates..but still the beautiful hardware that Samsung has recently started developing. Samsung also has stepped up their game in the computers and makes around 80% of their own parts for them. I believe samsung & asus should work together in the tablet game. Nvidia graphics, asus innovation, samsung’s customization & beauty…..

Personally I blame samsung on this one more than sprint. So what I did about a month ago was I bought a samsung 46″ led lcd watched it for 3 weeks and returned. Reason I gave for returning it is samsung sucks —-. Lol, hey its the least I can do. And as for sprint, soon as my contract is u p I will be moving to another carrier.

Also just a little info: For Sprint, the Better Business Bureau processed a total of 26315 complaints about this business in the last 36 months, and they have B- rating.

And for Samsung BBB processed a total of 2102 complaints and they have a A- rating.

I strongly suggest filing a few complaints yourself. I have ;-)

  • rye

It doesn’t matter who your carrier is you will have problems. All carriers are pretty much the same. If your not getting ripped off by one your gonna get rapped by another one.

  • Wendy

For all you who believe that the HTC Evo 4G is better than the Samsung Epic 4G – think again. I was looking at the Epic so that I could consider switching phones. The Evo has been having issues as well with the newest HTC update or ‘fix’. Check the complaint boards! In the ‘fix’, the streaming audio for all your radio apps was bugged – so none of those work, or work properly. 4G (which I do have in my area) won’t come up without a fight and then it drops. Before the ‘fix’, my 4G worked just fine and I had streaming audio – now I don’t. Whatever they did also decreases the battery even more! And to top it off; HTC loaded bloatware (Blockbuster, Nova) per Sprint’s instructions without a way to uninstall – oh, but I now have Swype! There are numerous other issues with ‘fix’.

Ok, so I have 2.2. It was awesome before the Sprint / HTC fix. Word to the wise: put your updates on manual and check out what they have to send you first!

    • RabbitMan

The Galaxy S line (including Nexus S), are the most powerful phones out there..still. However, despite the problems you are having with your HTC, keep in mind all the dual core phones are on their way out, most with Gingerbread installed. Samsung’s will more than likely be the fastest again, and of course with the best screen seeing as how they make the screen. Maybe the reason Samsung takes so long with their updates..is so they don’t run into an issue like you just had with your Evo?

All I hear is big babies talkin bout this so called update so wat if the update hasn’t come out yet. My epic that I’m usin 2 type this has never failed me I’ve always had a samsung phone and never had a problem u guys want the next best thing now and then complain once it fails. Stop being babies and wait 4 the finished update.

The concern is related to security and privacy related issues with 2.1. The 2.2 release resolved the majority of the issues.
