Alleged Next Gen Moto X Prototype Surfaces – Real of Fake?

For the past three years, Motorola’s flagship launch schedule has been rather consistent, with the original Moto X hitting the shelves in August 2013, the Moto X (2nd Gen) in September 2014, and the latest Moto X Style debuting earlier this year in September.

Needless to say, if history is any indication, Motorola’s next flagship phone should be released sometime in the second half of 2016, and with such a late timeframe on the horizon, we don’t expect the handset to rear its head in leaks and rumors anytime soon.

But much to our surprise, today a “spy photo” of an alleged next-gen Moto X prototype popped up on the web, along with a couple of hardware details that may or may not be accurate.

Without further ado, join us below for the full story.

Alleged Next Gen Moto X Prototype Leaks

The photo above originates from a Chinese blog and allegedly shows the shiny back of a next gen Moto X prototype, which seems to accommodate a rather large circular camera with an embedded flash.

What’s more intriguing about this alleged prototype is that it appears to feature a very different speaker configuration compared to previous Moto X models, accommodating a large speaker grille on the back, as opposed to two front-facing speaker grilles.

Not much has been revealed as far as hardware specifications go, but sources add that the terminal will make use of a Snapdragon 820 SoC.

This concludes the leak, which leaves us with the original question: is it real or fake? Well, it’s difficult to be sure of anything at this point, but assuming that Motorola will maintain its current launch schedule then it’s likely that the image above does not reflect the handset’s final design. It may be fake, or it may very well be an early prototype, but it could also be one of many prototypes that have yet to see the light of day.

Just make sure you have a proverbial pinch of salt nearby for this one, and we’ll keep you up to speed in case we find out more. Until then, feel free to share your thoughts below.
